Edited by B.H.V. Topping and L. Lämmer

With contributions from: J. Cai, E.C. da Silva, P. Devloo, P.K. Jimack, P.K. Jimack, J.W. Jones, I. Klapka, G. Kokassalakis, L. Laemmer, N.D. Lagaros, F. Neugebauer, M. Papadrakakis, G. Thierauf, B.H.V. Topping, N. Touheed and N.P. Weatherill.

This volume contains the keynote lectures presented at The Second Euro-Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing for Computational Mechanics, held in Sintra, Portugal on 4-9 April 1998. The Euro-Conference was funded by the European Commission. The focus of the book is on the application of high performance computing to computational mechanics.

The contents of the book include: parallel visualisation of computational engineering data; evolutionary algorithms applied to structural engineering problems; genetic algorithms applied to stuctural optimization; mesh generation, decomposition and refinement methods; developing parallel finite element software using MPI; techniques for parallel adaptivity; the object oriented approach to finite element programming; parallel solution methods for structural mechanics problems.

This book will be of interest to engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians concerned with the application of high performance computing to computational mechanics.
