Computational techniques are considered in this Chapter in the context of structural assessment. Techniques are focused on fundamental levels of investigation which aim to establish feasible states of equilibrium by methodologies which encourage interaction between the engineer and the computer. The computational models presented are based on primitive finite element concepts which are developed with a hierarchy of characteristics relating to equilibrium elements. The techniques described involve the determination of thrust lines for skeletal structures with the aid of spreadsheets, the optimization of general thrust line solutions by limit analyses, and the use of conventional finite element models with adaption of mesh topology to simulate cracking. All these techniques are illustrated by case studies involving actual historic structures.
